Three years after its initial launch, the collaborative project “I Belong” of “Me Alla Matia” NPO and ProvaT.O. NPO returns with a new mini-documentary on the inclusion of disabled people in artistic events, under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture.

6 accessible short documentaries with disabled contributors guide us through the cultural field and share positive examples of inclusion. This is a brief description of the series of short documentaries “I Belong“, which was delivered to the public at the end of 2021 and has accumulated over 90,000 views on social media to date. Through “I Belong”, we met with disabled artists and inclusive spaces and their work, highlighting the accessibility needs of disabled audiences at cultural events.

This year, under new auspices from the Ministry of Culture, “Me Alla Matia” NPO and ProvaT.O. NPO collaborated to produce another video, entitled “I Belong… at Artistic Events”. In our universally accessible video, we highlight the good practices of inclusion implemented by ATLAS E.P., the first company to provide universal accessibility services at events for people with disability. Also highlighted, among other things, is ATLAS E.P.’s pioneering collaboration with the Greek National Opera (GNO), aiming to present opera, musical theatre, and dance performances in a universally accessible manner. This outlines a shining example among cultural institutions, where accessibility and inclusion opportunities are a permanent design.

In this new video, we are hosted by the GNO and the SNFCC, and their statements:

  • Dr. Emmanouela Patiniotaki, founder of ATLAS E.P., explains in detail the services provided to make a performance universally accessible, as well as the process that requires such a thing in terms of collaboration with the respective contributors.
  • Ms. Kiki Kerzeli, musician and collaborator of the Greek National Opera, presents the inclusive framework of actions of the GNO in which accessible performances take place.
  • Vaggelis Avgoulas, president of Me Alla Matia NPO, shares his perspective as a disabled person on the value of universal accessibility in cultural events.

General Info about the project’s creators

Me Alla Matia NPO

Non-Profit Civil Partnership “Me Alla Matia” was founded in June 2018 by the blind lawyer Vaggelis Avgoulas and a group of disabled young people, who were self-organized to claim inclusion and accessibility through social action. It was implemented as an afterthought of the fully accessible news portal meallamatia.gr, which comprises an excellent way of promoting the disabled for more than 10 years, enhancing their social visibility.

ProvaT.O. NPO

ProvaT.O. (Prova Theatre Organization) is an artistic collective created in 2013 in Athens and has been operating as a Civic Non-Profit Company since 2019. The people behind ProvaT.O. are director Vangelis Laskaris and actress Vasiliki Drakopoulou. “At ProvaT.O. we make and tell stories about how people live today and how their behaviors and relationships are shaped. We believe that our work is a political act and of course, an act of responsibility towards the audience but mainly towards ourselves”, says the project’s director, Vangelis Laskaris.
