Maria Iliopoulou
Psychologist | President of the "Hellenic Association for Asperger's Syndrome" | Founding Member of "OPEN HORIZONS"
Maria Iliopoulou studied Educational Psychology at the University of Geneva and did post-graduate studies in Educational Sciences at Paris V. Since 1985, she has been working privately with children and teenagers with learning difficulties and behavioral problems, as well as parent counseling. At the same time, she is involved with the training of teachers in psychoeducational issues. She taught Pedagogy at the Technological Educational Institute of Athens in the Preschool Education Department, while for several years she worked as a psychologist-psychoeducator at the College of Athens. She was President of the Athens Municipal Nursery from 2011 to 2014. That year, she was appointed Deputy Mayor for Children in the Municipality of Athens. During her term of office, which lasted until 2019, she organized and coordinated, among other things, the innovative program “Open Schools of the Municipality of Athens”, which was awarded at international events and has been included in the city’s guide to good practices in defense of human rights by the Council of Europe, as well as the also award-winning pioneering program “That is How I Learn Better”. Since February 2020, she has been a founding member of the Private Capital Company “OPEN HORIZONS”. Since March 2020, she has been Vice-Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of the “METAdrasi” NGO. She is a founding member of the Association “Reading to Grow Up” (2013) and a founding member and President of the Board of Directors of the “Hellenic Association for Asperger’s Syndrome” (2007). She has translated and edited books on psychology and education while also participating in writing the collective work “Learning Cities” (Grigoris Publications, 2019).
